New Roots

This is a collection of ceramics made during a period focused on glaze research that began last fall during my residency at Guldagergaard Ceramic Research Center in Denmark.

This residency offered me the time to deepen my knowledge of glaze chemistry and the resources to use this theory to develop new glazes. I continued this work once I got back to Berlin and my tiny 15m2 square studio. After months of experimenting with tiles and test pieces, I gradually gained the confidence to apply the glazes I created to the ceramic objects and sculptures I had been making. I began to introduce new root structures and leaves, repeating and morphing over time, like plants adapting to a changing environment.

The ceramics in this collection all feature glazes I developed during this period. I am grateful to have had this work documented by photographer Phillip Koll’s archaeological eye.
